Stud News

Although the stud is aiming to reduce numbers to a manageable size, the opportunity to purchase a mare admired by many was too good to refuse.  Derralea Honour was purchased from Mark Bullen with a stunning chestnut colt by Imp UKerial Justify.  Sired by the exceptional Weston Chippendale (Imp UK UK) from the top producing mare Congarinni Heather (Chamberylayne Don Juan (Imp UK UK) x Belvior Hollyhock (Imp UK UK), Honour has settled in well.  Congarinni Heather is a full sister to one of the studs most prominent foundation mares Congarinni Honeysuckle.

Another new mare, RahaneSora, made her way to Cherrington late last year.  With a wealth of influential breeding including a double cross of the legendary Solway Master Bronze, Sora exhibits the lovely welsh characteristics with nice bone, great depth and outstanding movement.  Many ‘discussions’ were had between Michael and John over the purchase of another mare, however it seems some cannot resist the urge of purchasing a lovely mare with great bloodlines.

Several ponies have found new homes and have continued to be successful for their new owners.  Cherrington wishes all new purchasers the best of luck with their ponies and encourages everyone to keep in contact on the achievements of each.

Show News

What a tremendous season 2010 – 2011 has turned out to be for several Cherrington ponies.

The NSW All Welsh saw the Cherrington Mozart yearling B colt Glenmore Welshman (produced by Michael Gates for owner Jannys McDonald) steal the show by claiming the Welsh B Colt Championship, Supreme Welsh Pony Youngstock, Overall Supreme Welsh Pony and Runner Up Youngstock of Show under UK Cheryl Firth from Scotland.  Pictured left/right is Welshman being presented with the annual Cherrington Pony Stud trophy for Supreme Welsh Pony with John While and Gloria Jarrot.

Cherrington ponies excelled under Victorian judge Frances Best, despite the horrible weather conditions.  Cherrington Lady Josephine was awarded Champion Welsh B while Cherrington Mendolsen made a welcomed return to the show ring with being sashed Champion Welsh B Stallion, Supreme Welsh Pony and Best Welsh Exhibit of Show.

The following weekend saw Cherrington Mendolsen claim another Championship – this time under UK judge Megan Lewis from Wales at the Victorian All Welsh.  The very next day, Michael headed for the NSW Youngstock Show in Sydney, where Glenmore Welshman claimed the Welsh B Colt Championship and Cherrington Queen Arabella claimed the Welsh B Filly Championship, Supreme Welsh Pony and Runner Up Supreme Welsh.  One extremely long but successful weekend for the stud.

The Welsh Nationals in Victoria saw Cherrington Mendolsen, with new owner Alex Bethell, claim the prestigious National Welsh Pony title under UK judges Stephen Howard and Alison Squires.

Toowoomba Royal went ahead despite the devastating floods that swept through the area only month before.  Amanda Phillips’ newly acquired Cherrington Lady Josephine stood Runner UpYoungstock Welsh.  Continuing on, she was also awarded Runner Up Arabian Pony and Best Derivative Head at the recent Queensland Arabian Challenge.

The exciting new National Pony of the Year Show held in Sydney saw a last minute judge change and under the careful eye of Dr Edwards, Cherrington Queen Arabella was awarded the Welsh Filly Championship. Well done to the hard working committee on a great first show.  Cherrington looks forward to supporting again next year.

Bathurst Royal saw the Fallon family’s Cherrington Mikardo take out the Champion Noivce Show Hunter Pony and Champion Overall Welsh Gelding.  A great effort for a young pony in his first ridden season.

Michael has been fortunate to have judge at several shows during the season and in February saw a much anticipated trip to Hamilton in New Zealand’s north to judge the in-hand and ridden sections of the Welsh Ponies and Welsh Part Breds.

Michael also judged at Canberra Royal and the prestigious Sydney Royal.
